As John recalls, “On my birthday, there’s always some crisis that requires me to go to the front desk, and when I get there, everyone sings ‘Happy Birthday.’ One year—with Liza Minnelli leading the group—I was presented with a Bergdorf box. Inside was a tiny puppy, so small I didn’t know whether I should laugh or cry.” An only-in-New York moment to be sure.
